1. Turn off memory saver
Memory Saver frees up resources by suspending your inactive tabs. To turn it off:
- Open Google Chrome on your computer.
- Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the menu.
- Select "Settings".
- Click "Performance" in the left-hand menu.
- Turn off the "Memory Saver" option.
Always keep these sites active
If you want to keep Memory Saver active but protect essential applications (such as Ringover), you can exclude sites from sleeping:
- Go to the "Always keep these sites active" section (under performance settings).
- Click the "Add" button.
- Enter the main domain name (for example: ringover.com).
- Click "Add" to save the changes.
2. Manage automatic discarding per tab
You can also turn off automatic sleeping for an individual tab for your current session:
- Open a new tab in Chrome.
- Type "chrome://discards" in the address bar and press Enter.
- Find the relevant tab in the process list.
- Click the value in the "Auto Discardable" column to change it to "False".
3. Analyze your Google Chrome extensions
Some installed extensions can force tabs to suspend or reload unexpectedly. To identify a problematic extension:
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select "More tools", then "Extensions".
- Turn off all your extensions.
- Turn them back on one by one to test their impact on your browser.
Identify resource-heavy extensions
You can use Chrome's Task Manager to quickly identify extensions consuming too much memory:
- Click the three-dot menu.
- Select "More tools", then "Task Manager".
- Sort the list by clicking the "Memory" column.
- Select the resource-heavy extension or tab and click "End process".
4. Manage your tabs and use dedicated extensions
An overload of open tabs forces Chrome to free up memory in the background. To better organize your resources:
- Systematically close tabs you are no longer using.
- Save important pages to your bookmarks to view later.
- Use grouping extensions like OneTab to reduce RAM usage.
Use a discarding control extension
If you want to automate or customize this behavior, you can install dedicated extensions:
- Open the Chrome Web Store.
- Search for "Disable Automatic Tab Discarding" or "Tab Auto Refresh".
- Click "Add to Chrome" to install the selected extension.
- Configure the tool according to your work preferences.
- The extension "The Great Suspender" is now obsolete and no longer recommended.
- The more tabs you have auto-refreshing, the higher the memory and CPU usage.
🎉 You now know how to configure Google Chrome to prevent tab discarding and ensure the stability of your communication tools!
